State Highway 6 is the main Highway running north and south of the rugged West Coast, The road is Tar sealed and in excellent condition, during our winter as with many other roads they do become icy, planning travel between the hours of 10.00am and 5.00pm is often a good choice.
Though the road is very windy in places as it passes through the mountains, and native bushland rainforest. It also offers plenty of opportunities for excellent scenic photographs and free walking tracks. The walking tracks are usually well formed and it pays to stick to the marked track.
Heading north and south you pass Lakes that offer excellent mirrored images of the snow capped Southern Alps of Westland National Park they also of a great spot for a swim or for the fisherman some great fishing spots to cast their line (note fishing in the lakes and rivers requires a fishing licence).
